Kerin Groves, PHD

Dr. Kerin Groves, PHD, is professional career coach, management consultant, speaker, trainer, chaplain, and social science researcher. She coaches individual clients during career changes, teach career development workshops, guide managers in deploying their leadership skills, train work teams to overcome challenges, and consult with organizations in transition. She also shares my research on happy long-term marriages through speaking at couples retreats, relationship enhancement workshops, and special events.

Dr. Groves will present, How To Make Your 2021 Miserable!. It's time for New Year's resolutions! If you aspire to make yourself miserable this year, what are the best techniques for doing so?  Misery has been raised to an art form by many writers, and this tongue-in-cheek workshop will teach you how to hack those internal habits that sabotage your writing success. You'll learn how to identify and edit your self-defeating behaviors, rewrite your negative thoughts, and redesign your emotional stability for self-confidence and writing productivity. Kat Lewis is a self-prescribed stiletto heel and gold wearing damsel but she’s rarely in distress. Lewis writes romantic thrillers that seek to empower women with diverse ethnic background to own their identity and use that to positively impact the world around them. Her short stories--Veiled in Ice, Nebulous Affairs, and Contingency--have been featured in Oklahoma Christian Fiction Writers yearly short story collection for the past three years. When she's not onstage encouraging millennial women, she can usually be found in a Krav Maga gym, volunteering at her church, and serving as President for the Oklahoma Christian Fiction Writers (OCFW). Her intuitive human understanding can help other writers bridge the communication gap and jump into the publishing world. Her focus of study for the last few years has been on social media optimization and platform building in the publishing industry. Her experience in the mental health field and yoga training help her guide and assist clients with stress and anxiety in this highly competitive industry.

Join us as Amy unlocks, Romance Tropes That Work. This workshop includes looking at the structure for a romance novel and what is required by the industry including word count and pacing structure. I talk with the class about tropes that work and how to apply them. What tried and true characters that the readers like best and how to give them depth. What a “hook” is in a romance and why they are critical to success. And finally, why angst sells.

Bring your misbehaving characters, convoluted plots, complex themes...we want it all! We'll use this time to problem solve in pairs and with the group as a whole. Bring an excerpt of your work (if applicable), a notepad, and something to write with--it's going to be a great time of fellowship and collective problem solving! Also feel free to bring an excerpt simply to share and receive feedback!

There are designated "writing hours" and community and private review times. Treat your writing like legitimate profession. We've set aside designated writing hours--8 hours of time split up throughout the day for you to fully focus on your novel. You get the best of both worlds!
